The 2025 Oregon legislative session produced many changes to the code governing the Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Some of these changes involve the reduction of time limits on SR22 requirements.

Effective January 1, 2026, if you are convicted of driving without insurance and it doesn’t involve an accident, the SR22 requirement period will be reduced from the typical three-year period down to one year. So far, it doesn’t seem to affect drivers already convicted of failure to provide proof of insurance prior to that date. They will still need to serve out the remainder of the original three-year requirement. To be sure of your Proof Require Until (PRU) date, you can call 503-299-9999 and confirm with a representative.

If your driving without proof of insurance conviction involves an accident (at fault or not-at fault), the three-year SR22 requirement will still apply, but you will no longer be automatically suspended for one year. This lifts a tremendous burden from those who still need to go to work and skips the need to apply for a Hardship Permit.

The suspension may still apply to those drivers convicted of more serious offenses beyond driving without insurance and causing an accident. The suspension periods will vary depending on the severity of the conviction.
